I've managed to get the Team Webster together to play Chomp! over the long winter break from work, and i think they really liked it, but they informed me that Chomp was already taken as a name, so now, tentatively, it's Feeding Frenzy, thought I'm sure that's taken too.
anyway, there's been a unique turn of events lately, and it's quite possible that i'm going to enter this game in the InDeCon contest at ANCON this year. we'll have to see what happens here.
more to come later. things that question my sanity are forthcoming.

Super Dungeon Full Circle.
a small reflection point on something.
it amazes me how some things tend to pick up on certain vibes in your life and the ongoings at certain points within that life. (does that make sense?) much like a tattoo, everyday objects can be tied in with some of the most dramatic moments of our lives, and will always carry the memory of those moments. a memento of past events, good and bad.
such is the point with super dungeon explore, a game that i have had for almost a year now, and marks the beginning of one of the hardest years of my life.
i was gainfully employed at an automotive parts supplier outside of town, but had left the company in a fit of rage because i was forced to pick between family and my career. it was not my best moment, but i wasn't going to let the company dictate my life.
i went with my daughter to a gaming convention that weekend, something we had been planning for a while, and it was there that i purchased SDX. i perused it, and it was a cool buy, but it was shelved due to a deep depression and marital issues. so, it sat unopened and unfulfilled in my garage.
the game returned to me later that year in the late summer, when i went to gencon to fill an obligation that i refused to let fall to the wayside. i talked to my buddy josh, who had mention that he had seen it there in the dealer room, and was interested in playing it despite the hefty price tag. this only reminded me that i had the game, and that i should eventually play it.
we met up later in November, and i wrote up a little review here, but again, the box returned to the garage waiting for another play. this time due to money and lack of motivation.
at the beginning of this month, i became gainfully employed, and i was able to close one of the ugliest chapters of my life...by being able to purchase the "Von Drakk Manor" expansion for SDX.
its time to play again, old friend. lets dust you off.

gaming, games, and more games
Yesterday, i met up with a good friend of mine, Josh. He and I are into pretty much the same kind of things. we like games that are different, easy to run, and vary from the vast amount of old standards in some way that sets it apart from the others. Having said that, we were going to try and run the Seyvoth Manor Dread game, but lacked enough players.
a few hours before meeting up with Josh, he posted to me on social media about a local board game group in town that was having an open house. we decided to go check it out at 3pm. at least we would be able to play some other stuff too.
i had known about this group before hand, had been to this specific building in years prior. its a good group of people who are really down to earth and are very enthusiastic about their group.
we first played a game called Coloretto, a game that involves building a collection of specific colors. it was fast paced and pretty good, a good warm up game for the next thing to come our way.
the next game was The Quiet Year, a great abstract game in which the players build an entire world on a map, and things are introduced throughout the game with a pull from a regular deck of cards. i was a little disappointed in my drawings, doesn't help when your playing with an artist, but the game was really absorbing me. i like it a lot. and might have to get a copy some way.
we broke for lunch. Josh and i hit up the local golden arches and got to talk about a few things. we headed back afterwards, and we decided to play Kobolds ate my Baby. This was something that i had wanted to play for a while, but the cobwebs sat heavy on the rules on my mind. it took awhile to get the gears going again, but i managed.
i pulled out my old Frankenstein board that i use for generic KAMB! games. and just dived in and went for it, describing everyday things for creatures that don't get out much is a bit difficult at times, but worth it. i think it went well, and deserves another play-through at some point.
we wrapped up the session, reaching deep into the 23rd hour of the day (11:00pm) with a game currently on kickstarter called Zombie House Blitz, a wacky combination of speed and solitaire that requires fast thinking and even faster hands. a great game that quick to learn and hard to master.

so i drop Josh back off at home, make my way to my domicile and head to bed at about 1am in the morning. my dreams are filled with, you guessed it, more games. my first dream is game oriented, but is so mindbending and strange i won't talk about it here. i think i'm going to write that one down. see what comes up.
the second dream involves friends from all of my gaming groups over the years. we we're all at the house i lived in during my childhood, and we were playing KAMB! again at the table. i remember little about the actual game itself, but the phrase "Identity Queft" came into play i know that Queft is a word jumble between Quest and Theft, and i have some ideas as how to flesh this thing out. intriguing.
so i played real games for nearly 8 hours, and then my brain played dream games for another 7 hours. isn't that really enough now?
cheers

Frag Ultra X
the tentative name for my bigger and better version of Frag. a lot of homespun ideas in this project.
i've taken a hard look at the maps that i have (the base box and DeathMatch) and have come to the decision that they are ugly. i'll be fixing that of course. also, the maps are 16 squares x 26 squares, and i intend to make them 20x30 for purposes of my traps. 1d20 and 1d30 are added to the mix for that. then it's just simple plotting of coordinates for that.
i'm looking at some boards already for the map. i may be crazy here, but i'm thinking about doing three boards that are similar to my Clash of the Kaiju setup. smaller squares of course.
i obviously can't do tunnels because that will complicate the rules somewhat, unless i use another board for that tunnel. i will have raised areas, but it will depend on design of the board and how 3d i really want it.
i have several miniatures who are making the jump to Frag. the first is Big Lou. here's some flavor text.

Big Lou is an odd addition to the Frag
UX arena, since he is a throwback to the 1920s gangsters that plagued
the streets of the big cities. He dresses in suits, complete with
bowler hat and fine leather shoes, rather than the bulky and often
lethal garb of his fellow competitors. Many in the arena have been
fooled by his simple and vintage look, but in reality Big Lou is a
solid killer who is not afraid to use anything he finds in the arena
to finish the job.
the brainstorm continues.

Building a Better Frag
i've been going back to my gaming roots for the past few weeks, opening up the boxes of games i haven't played in months. i stumbled across my old copy of Frag by Steve Jackson Games. it's a great combat game that emulates a FPS, and it's been through many different reprints. i have the old flat box from 2001. it's well played.
one thing that i didn't really care for is the box, just because once all things are cut out, there's no way to get the box flat again. so the first thing i intend to do is rebuild or substitute the box. however, as we all know, i can never let anything alone for too long.
i'm a big fan of FPS games, having several favorite franchises, but the one that sticks out the most for me is Unreal Tournament, which really goes hand in hand with Frag. my big intention is to make my own map, preferably taking some inspiration from the UT series, and make it durable, three-dimensional, and large scale enough to make it into a Convention game.
i like the concepts that were put forth in the Frag miniatures box set and also in the Deadlands set; Specific named characters with pre-built stats. i intend to bring this to the table, incorporating characters already in the game, along with some wayward minis of my own. additionally i'd like to be able to have my board be able to be used for several scenarios, like CTF, DM, Team DM, and maybe even some form of the Domination game. just thoughts and spit-ballin' ideas, but definite possibilities.
i'm going to include this link here, because of all the extra goodies and ideas here. i see there is a Frag/ Zombies!!! crossover game. perhaps i can add in a KAMB! scenario of my own?

Let's Explore...Super Dungeon Explore!
i picked up this board game several months ago, but had never played until last night.
its called Super Dungeon Explore and its a dungeon crawl game that emulates the good old days of 8-bit/ 16-bit RPGs. it sets heroes vs the consul and his minions. there are a multitude of minis, cards, counters, and dice in the set. tons of goodies to deal with.
so last night i got over to a couple of friends' house and was able to sit down and play a few games. the first game was an 8bit game, which consists of two heroes vs the consul's denizens and a mini boss. that game was more or less the intro game that really helped us grasp the flavor of the game and the small nuances of the game. the game ended in my defeat, since i was the consul.
the second game was a 16 bit game, which involved 3 heroes vs the consul's denizens, minions, a mini-boss, and the main dragon boss. that game went in my favor, with the dragon coming out and flaming everything in sight.
after the game, we sat around and discussed the pros and cons of the game.
the pros: its a great looking game that really captures the flavor of what its trying to capture. the minis are well sculpted and even a bit cute since they're Chibi in design. all components are high quality and built to last. play is picked up rather easily during an initial playthrough.
the cons: this game is pricey to begin with, and with several expansions on the way, it's going to be an investment. as a player, the game will become boring after several playthroughs with the basic set, since the same monsters will be out on the board every time. the consul's options are very limited in this set, and it will become apparent that at least one expansion will have to be bought.
the verdict: it's a great game, but it's going to hit you in the wallet.
also, i want to point out this group on youtube that has a great game series that explains how to play as well as an actual gameplay series. this first vid was perfect to getting a taste to what the game entails. kudos to them.

10 13 12 Board Game Bandit
From 2004 to the present, i really got into board games. i have a vast collection of board games, card games, and everything in between. there's something very relaxing and generally good about them. a bunch of people at the table, unplugged from technology (for the most part), conversing, and having a good time.
now, there is a problem with board games, they take up tons of space, both on the table and when being stored and out of play. i now have all my shelves in my garage fulled with the buggers, plus some in the house, and some at another person's house. go figure.
Before the closure of one of the local games stores in this area, i was hosting board game sundays once a month at the store, and i was also doing reviews for some of the more prevalent board games out there. this space is going to become a home to my reviews of the board games that i have , and some of the newer things that are out there.
in the next few weeks, i will have some reviews for you to peruse. hope you read them.
thanks
